What is a heat map?

A heat map is an immediate summary of information presented in a matrix where values are represented by colors. Heat maps are a great tool to quickly identify areas of concern such as gaps in requirements or testing and scope creep.

Let’s get visual!

There are two levels of heat maps in validateMyApp.

Artifact Heat Map

The artifact heat map represents the status of an artifact in the context of the overall validation process. For example, you might have a URS approved but not all of the requirements can be traced to successful execution in a PQ and vice-versa. Below are some of the questions that the artifact heat map can answer visually.

  • Does your URS trace to a successfully executed PQ?
  • Does your PQ cover all of the requirements in your URS?
  • Does your PQ contain tests that are not traceable to the URS?
  • Does your FRS trace to a successfully executed OQ?
  • Does your OQ cover all of the requirements in your FRS?
  • Does your OQ contain tests that are not traceable to the FRS?

The Artifact Heap Map gives a high-level alert, however, the devil is in the details of the requirements trace heat map. ValidateMyApp allows for drilling into an artifact to investigate further via the Requirement Trace Heat Map.

Requirement Trace Heat Map

The Requirement Trace Heat Map represents the status of individual requirements and whether they have been fully tested and whether scope creep is occurring. The same questions can be answered visually with the Requirement Trace Heat Map but at a deeper level of detail.

Color coding is used in both heat maps to represent the various states.

  • Green = Covered
  • Yellow = In-Progress
  • Red = Missing
  • Orange = Scope Creep
  • Gray = Not Applicable
